George Balanchine's the Nutcracker® Sensory-Friendly Performance
PNB is proud to present an inclusive, sensory-friendly performance of George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker®. Join us for the Northwest’s favorite festive tradition, featuring all the sparkle and joy you’ve come to expect. The Nutcracker experience features a picture-perfect lobby, Tchaikovsky’s classic score (played brilliantly by the PNB Orchestra), gorgeous costumes and scenery, impressive performances, and so much more! This performance will feature a supportive and welcoming environment so children and adults affected by autism or with other sensory needs can enjoy the shared experience of live ballet with their friends and family. Modified lighting and sound levels, fidgets, entry/exit privileges, trained staff, allowance of devices, and a quiet room will be offered at this matinee.
What is a Sensory-Friendly Performance?
Sensory-friendly performances are designed to provide a welcoming and supportive environment for people with sensory processing challenges to enjoy the shared experience of live ballet with their friends and family. This performance will have a relaxed environment including lighting and sound modifications and entry/exit privileges. In this performance we understand that patrons may move, vocalize, and behave in ways that are sometimes not welcome in formal performance settings.
Theatre Modifications and Resources:
- • Audience lights remain on at a low level in the theatre during the performance
- • Audience members are free to talk and utilize space throughout the theatre for standing and movement
- • Sensory supports (fidgets, earplugs, noise cancelling ear-muffs) available in the lobby before the performance
- • Audience members are welcome to bring their own manipulatives, seat cushions, comfort objects, and extra support items
- • Tablets, smart phones, and other electronic devices will be allowed with headphones during the performance
- • A guide to lighting and sound cues that may be overwhelming during the performance
- • Designated quiet and activity areas throughout McCaw Hall
- • PNB staff and volunteers trained to provide additional support and guidance
